Search ai artwork prompts and the page you get is almost identical to the one for art prompts. Same stock library guide, same Adobe page, same Medium listicle of twenty magical ones, same marketplace. Which is fair, since the queries mean nearly the same thing to most people.

I want to split them anyway, because there's a real difference between a prompt that produces a nice image on a screen and a prompt that produces a piece. Style is the first thing, and that half has its own treatment in ai art prompt, where I break style words into the six axes they secretly set. This one is the other half. Composition, palette, and the arithmetic of getting something out of a model and onto paper at a size that doesn't look soft.

Short version if you're skimming. Composition is a slot most people leave empty, so the model fills it with the safest arrangement it knows, which is why so much generated artwork looks centred and inert. And the print ceiling is lower than you think, since on one of the two big APIs the largest image you can request is exactly 8,294,400 pixels, which works out to under ten inches square at proper print resolution.

The Empty Slot Is Composition

Here's a test. Look at the last ten images you generated and ask where the subject sits in the frame.

Centre. Almost always centre, slightly large, facing forward, with the background arranged symmetrically behind it. That's not the model having taste, it's the model defaulting, because your prompt described what the thing is and said nothing about where it goes.

Google's image generation documentation has one template that addresses this directly and it's the minimalist one. Their skeleton reads "A minimalist composition featuring a single [subject] positioned in the [bottom-right/top-left/etc.] of the frame. The background is a vast, empty [color] canvas, creating significant negative space. Soft, subtle lighting. [Aspect ratio]." The interesting part is that placement gets its own bracket, right there in the second clause, which none of the other twelve templates on that page bother with.

Placement is a control. It's just one almost nobody uses.

Composition Vocabulary That Does Something

My own working list, ordered roughly by how reliably each one lands. The last column is what tends to go wrong when you use it.

The direction row is the one I'd hand somebody first. A subject looking into empty space reads as composed and a subject looking at the viewer reads as a portrait, and swapping between the two changes the whole feel for the cost of three words.

The scale row is the one I get wrong most. I keep writing small figures into big landscapes and then wondering why the face is a smear, which is a distance problem rather than a prompt problem and no amount of detail words will fix it.

Palette Is A Count, Not A Colour

Most people specify colour by naming one. Blue. Warm. Earth tones. That's a hint rather than a specification, and you get whatever the model's average blue picture looks like.

What works better, in my experience across a fair few attempts, is specifying three things at once. How many colours there are, how they relate, and where each one sits.

So instead of "blue and orange", something closer to "four colours total, a dominant desaturated blue-grey across the background, warm orange confined to a single small light source, near-black for the figure, one strip of unbleached paper white". That's still a sentence. It just contains a count, a hierarchy, and locations.

The count is doing the heaviest lifting. Left unspecified, generated artwork drifts toward a lot of colours, because the training data is full of photographs and photographs contain everything. Naming a small number forces decisions, and decisions are what makes an image look designed.

I wouldn't bother with hex codes. Every time I've tried, the model treated them as a vibe rather than a value, and I'd rather spend those characters on where the colour goes.

The Print Ceiling, Worked Out

Now the arithmetic, which I've not seen anyone do and which decides whether any of this ends up on a wall.

OpenAI publishes hard constraints for their current image model. Maximum edge length of 3,840 pixels, both edges must be multiples of 16, the long-to-short ratio can't exceed 3:1, and total pixels must sit between 655,360 and 8,294,400.

Notice that their largest listed size, 3840 by 2160, multiplies out to exactly 8,294,400. The 4K landscape option isn't just the biggest preset, it's the ceiling itself, and every other shape has to fit under the same pixel budget.

Divide by print resolution and you get physical inches.

That fourth row is the largest square that fits inside the pixel budget, which I worked out rather than read, since it isn't one of the listed presets. Square is the shape most people want for wall art and 9.6 inches at 300 dpi is a small picture.

Two more results fall out of the same budget and both surprised me.

A full A4 page at 300 dpi needs roughly 2,481 by 3,507 pixels, which is about 8.7 million, comfortably over the ceiling. So you can't quite do it. The largest A4-proportioned image that fits comes out around 2,416 by 3,424, which lands at roughly 292 dpi. Close enough that nobody will see it, and worth knowing before you promise somebody a print file.

US Letter is friendlier because it's less elongated. The biggest Letter-shaped image inside the budget is about 2,528 by 3,264, which is roughly 297 dpi.

If you want anything genuinely large, you're upscaling after the fact, and that's a different tool and a different article. What I'd take from the table is that 150 dpi is the honest working number for a poster viewed from a metre away, and at 150 you can get to about 25 inches on the long edge, which is a real poster.

Aspect Ratio Is A Composition Decision, Not An Export One

Worth restating because it's the mistake that costs the most time.

Asking for the same scene at 4:5 rather than 16:9 doesn't give you the wide version with the sides cut off. It gives you a different picture, composed for a vertical frame, with more headroom and a tighter horizontal read. Google lists ten ratios for their image models, from 21:9 down through the square to 9:16, and the fact that they treat it as a first-class parameter rather than a post-process tells you how they expect it to be used.

So decide the shape before you write the description, not after. And if you need two orientations of one idea, that's two prompts, not one prompt and a crop.

For print there's a practical corollary. Generate at the shape you're printing, including the frame's proportions, because reframing a finished piece into a standard frame size means cutting into a composition you spent effort on.

Getting A Set That Belongs Together

If you're making more than one piece, the technique is the same one that works for photographs, which is to split the prompt into a frozen half and a moving half.

Style, palette, surface, aspect ratio and any exclusions live in the frozen half and get pasted identically, character for character, every single time. Subject and composition are the moving half.

I learned this making covers for the books I self-publish, where I retyped the style description from memory each time and ended up with a shelf that looked like six different publishers had made it. Rewording it even slightly is enough to drift, and I mean slightly.

One thing I'd add for artwork specifically that doesn't apply to photographs. Keep the composition slot in the moving half but vary it on purpose, because a series where every piece is composed identically reads as a template rather than a body of work. Same palette, same mark, different arrangement. That's what makes a set feel intentional instead of mass produced.

Questions

How long should an artwork prompt be? Six to nine strong clauses is where my hit rate peaks across image models generally. Composition takes up two or three of those, which means you have fewer left for style than you'd like, which is exactly why the style block should be frozen and reused rather than rewritten each time.

Can I get text on the piece? Short strings, sometimes. OpenAI's own documentation says the model "can still struggle with precise text placement and clarity" even after significant improvement, so for anything where the wording has to be exact, generate clean and set the type yourself afterwards.

Is 300 dpi actually necessary? For something held in the hand, yes. For a framed piece on a wall, 150 is fine and the table above shows how much bigger that lets you go. Print shops will quote 300 because it's the safe answer for everything.

Why does my composition instruction get ignored? Usually because it's competing with a very long subject description, or because it's sitting at the end of the prompt where terms lose arguments. Move it earlier.

Should I use negative statements to clear the frame? Sometimes, and less than you'd think. Naming the empty space as empty works better than listing what shouldn't be in it. The subtraction side generally is in negative prompts.

It's two seconds of typing, it's the slot the prompt banks leave empty because their prompts were written for somebody else's subject, and it's the difference between a picture that happened and a picture that was composed.
