Every collection of cool ai prompts is the same shape. Fifty best image prompts, twenty magical ones, a marketplace with four thousand, an AskReddit thread. Copy the string, get the picture, and about six weeks later the picture stops looking cool because everyone else copied it too.

So here's the answer I'd rather give. Cool ai prompts aren't a list, they're about eight visual mechanisms that keep getting rediscovered, and knowing the mechanism means you can apply it to your own subject instead of somebody else's. I logged hit rates on all eight because some of them almost always work and some of them almost never do, and the collections never mention which is which.

I'll go through the mechanisms, what each costs in attempts, and the ones that have already worn out.

Eight Mechanisms, With What They Cost In Renders

This is my own logging rather than anybody's study. Roughly a hundred and twenty renders across eight mechanisms over a few evenings, about fifteen per mechanism, with keep meaning I'd have used it for something rather than merely that it worked. Small sample, one person's taste deciding what counts as a keeper, so read the ordering rather than the exact fractions.

The top row is the one I want to argue about. Negative space minimalism has the best hit rate of anything I've tested and it's almost absent from the cool-prompt collections, because a small object on an empty background doesn't screenshot well next to a neon cyberpunk city. It photographs well in use, though, which is a different criterion.

Google publishes a template for exactly this, and it's worth having in front of you. "A minimalist composition featuring a single [subject] positioned in the [bottom-right/top-left/etc.] of the frame. The background is a vast, empty [color] canvas, creating significant negative space. Soft, subtle lighting. [Aspect ratio]." Four decisions, one of which is where in the frame the subject sits, and specifying that is why it works so reliably.

The impossible physics row is the honest disappointment. Three keepers out of fifteen is a bad rate and I keep going back to it anyway, because the three are much better than anything the other rows produce.

What Cool Actually Means, Mechanically

Strip the aesthetics and there are two ingredients.

One legible idea that survives being seen small, and exactly one thing that shouldn't be possible. That's it. Two things.

The legibility part is where most attempts die. If somebody has to study the image to work out what they're looking at, they won't, and the picture fails at the only scale it'll ever be seen at, which is small and in a feed. So the test I run is to shrink it to about two hundred pixels wide and see whether the idea still arrives.

The impossibility part is why "a beautiful landscape" is never cool no matter how well it renders. Nothing in it contradicts anything. Add one contradiction, a staircase that goes into water, a room where the rain is indoors, and the same technical quality suddenly has somewhere to go.

Two contradictions is usually one too many. I've made that mistake often enough to state it as a rule I'd defend. The eye reads the first impossible thing and then can't tell whether the second is intentional or a rendering fault, and the whole picture collapses into noise.

The Thumbnail Check

Six things, in the order I check them, and it takes about fifteen seconds.

Shrink to roughly 200 pixels wide. Can you still name the subject? Is there one clear focal area rather than three competing ones? Does the silhouette read, meaning could you identify the shape in pure black? Is there a single dominant colour relationship rather than five? Does the impossible element sit inside the focal area rather than in a corner? And is there any text, because if so it will be wrong and it will be the first thing people notice.

Most of my discards fail on the second and third. Generated images have a tendency toward even, decorative business, where everything is equally detailed and nothing is emphasised, and that's a silhouette problem more than a content problem.

The Thumbnail Rule Came From Covers, Not From Prompting

I didn't arrive at that check through any interest in composition theory. I arrived at it because I self-publish books, and a cover on a store listing is about the size of a postage stamp next to forty other postage stamps, and the first several I made were detailed in a way that turned to grey mush at that size.

The detail wasn't wrong. It was just invisible where it mattered, and the images I'd been proudest of in full view were the ones that disappeared fastest in the grid. What survived was two or three shapes, one strong colour relationship, and a lot of empty space, which is more or less what every professionally designed cover in the same category was already doing and which I'd looked straight past because it seemed too simple to be a decision.

That experience is why the negative space row sits at the top of my table and why I trust it more than the fraction alone would justify. A mechanism that produces images which work small is worth more than one that produces images which work only at full size, and almost everything anyone makes now is seen small first.

The general version of the lesson is that impressive and effective are different targets, and the prompt collections are optimising for impressive, since that's what makes somebody save the post. If you're making something that has a job, run the thumbnail check before you run anything else, and be prepared to throw out the render you liked best.

The Ones That Expired

This is the part the collections can't tell you, because their business is the collection.

The lesson I'd take isn't to avoid those. It's that "cool" is a moving target set by how much of it people have already seen, so a mechanism ages while a picture doesn't. The negative space one at the top of my table will presumably age too once enough people notice it works.

Video Is Where The Cool Moved

Images got easy and abundant, so the surprise migrated to motion. It's also where the failure rate is dramatically higher, which keeps it interesting for now.

Google's Veo documentation names camera positioning as an optional prompt component with terms like "aerial view, eye-level, top-down shot, dolly shot, or worms eye", plus composition terms including wide shot, close-up, and two-shot. Those are the levers. Here's how they've behaved for me.

The pattern is that simple moves survive and complicated ones don't, which is the same lesson as the two-contradictions rule wearing a different hat. Clip length forces this anyway, since Veo runs 4, 6, or 8 seconds and eight is the ceiling, so there isn't room for a move plus a second move plus a subject action. Pick one. Cool Text Prompts Are A Different Thing Entirely

Worth separating, because the search phrase covers both and the two have nothing in common.

Text prompts marketed as cool are usually either a party trick, a personality read, or a productivity template with a costume on. They're worth an evening and they don't compound, and I went through which of them actually teach you something in fun chatgpt prompts. The reason I put images and video at the centre of this piece rather than text is a straightforward asymmetry. A striking text output impresses the person who typed it. A striking image survives being shown to somebody who wasn't there.

What Gets Asked

What's the highest hit rate mechanism? Negative space minimalism, in my logging, and by a decent margin. It's also the least likely to appear in a cool prompt list because it looks understated in a grid.

Why do my cool prompts look generic? Usually because the impressive words are doing the steering. Epic, cinematic, hyper-detailed and their relatives all point at the most averaged corner of the training data, which is the opposite of what you wanted.

How many attempts should something striking take? More than a portrait. My keep rate on the low-probability mechanisms sits around one in five, so budget accordingly, and generate at the cheapest quality tier while you're still deciding.

Do these work the same across generators? The mechanisms do, since they're photographic and compositional rather than model syntax. Reliability varies a lot and shifts with releases.

Is there a shortcut to good taste? Look at more non-AI images. Photobooks, film stills, packaging, printmaking. Everything in my table is borrowed from a pre-existing visual tradition and the people who prompt well are usually the people who've looked at a lot of pictures.

What I'd Try First

Take the thing nearest you and put it alone in an empty frame with one soft light, positioned off-centre, at 4:5.
